Angling’s largest awareness programme, National Fishing Month (NFM), continues to be a cause for celebration following the introduction of more than 14,000 new people to angling this year. They took part in a nationwide schedule of 300 special NFM events held across just six weeks during July and August 2014.
NFM 2015 was launched at ‘Parklife’ in Milton Country Park, Cambridge, on a gloriously sunny day during which nearly 90 people tried angling for the first time. The event was staged in partnership with Cambridge Sports Lakes Trust, and it allowed visitors to explore a variety of ways to improve their health and wellbeing, as well as trying a range of sports (including fishing) to inspire them to become more active.

The terrible British weather and the 2012 Olympics didn’t dampen the spirit of the coaches and National Fishing Month (NFM) organisers this year. Despite the poor weather conditions and the cancellation of the CLA Game Fair at Belvoir Castle, National Fishing Month 2012 began in style with a celebrity launch. Fisheries Minister, Richard Benyon, was on hand to open activities at a special event organised by Reading and District Angling Association (RDAA) at Longwater Lake, Green Park, Reading on Friday 20th July.
School children from the local area enjoyed one on one coaching sessions from Les Webber MBE (Angling Projects), Danny Williams (Angling Trust) and Will Barnard (RDAA), and the teachers even joined in! The Minister spent time talking all the participants and their coaches and he then joined the team for a celebratory picnic.
Richard Benyon said: “National Fishing Month is a fantastic opportunity to introduce thousands of new people to the benefits of angling. It was great to see youngsters from Reading getting into the sport at Friday’s launch and I hope the next four weeks are a great success.”

It is less than two weeks to the start of National Fishing Month (NFM) 2012, and the indications are that it is set to be yet another fabulous promotion. With more than 250 events nationwide listed online at www.nationalfishingmonth.com, there’s plenty of opportunity for people to have a go at fishing at a venue near to home.
Everyone who participates receives a NFM Goody Bag containing a ‘Get Into Fishing’ booklet full of information on how to get started and advice on different types of fishing, stickers and a money off voucher for the new Go Catch board game. They also receive a certificate of participation as a memento of their days fishing.
NFM headline sponsor, Go Outdoors, has organised a series of in store events around the country which include teaching sessions and hints and tips on carp, coarse, game and sea fishing. The NFM website shows details of how to find a Go Outdoors store nearby. Go Outdoors will also be promoting National Fishing Month to its extensive database, providing the initiative with an exciting and far reaching promotional message.

As a full time angling coach, Professional Anglers’ Association Director Martin Porter considers himself to be a very lucky man. He has turned a lifetime hobby into a career by teaching troubled young people to fish.
But his work is much more complicated than that. In fact, it’s as complex as the young people themselves and the reasons they fail to fit into society .
